Transparency report for October, 2013

October turned out to be a great month for us, thanks to our readers.

As I’ve mentioned in prior updates, contributors are paid via donations plus a $100 match from the editor. Donations are split among the contributors, but that’s not necessarily going to be the way we operate long term. We’re working to find a model that will provide you with free content without having to constantly solicit donations. It isn’t easy.

On Oct. 25, I made an appeal to our readers to contribute because we hadn’t raised any money. You came through in fine form, and for that, I am extremely grateful.

Here’s what we raised this month:

October Donations

Please note that this is before fees are subtracted by PayPal, so that will knock about $10 off the final amount.

I also told you I’d let you know if our online ads were bringing in anything. I’m currently signed up with the WordAds program. I had been warned not to expect much from it, and I’m glad I listened to that advice. We earned about $28 from ad impressions, but that won’t actually be disbursed until we make $100. So, yeah, long term that won’t be sustainable. I didn’t want you to think your donations weren’t needed.

Some other important milestones this month:

– Decaturish.com, LLC was officially approved by the Georgia Secretary of State.

– We had a 74 percent increase in page views. I set a modest goal for October. We received around 15,700 page views in September, and figured 20,000 in October was easily obtainable. We had about 27,000. Our unique views (the unique IP addresses), increased by 79 percent.

I like to end these posts with survey questions about our progress. I know we have room for improvement on a lot of fronts. I recognize, of course, that we won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. If you aren’t satisfied with the coverage you get here, I’d like to hear from you. I can be reached at [email protected].

If you could take a moment to answer these poll questions, I’d appreciate it. We do take feedback seriously.
