DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted today to ask the county’s state legislative delegation to put a one-year hold on creating new cities.

Currently there are several new city proposals in the works, proposals that include incorporating the cities of Briarcliff, Tucker and Lakeside.

Commissioners initially considered asking for a three-year moratorium, but changed the wording after Commissioner Kathie Gannon suggested a one-year “pause” would be easier for legislators to accept.

“There’s a lot of reasons to simply ask them to hold these issues for a year,” Gannon said.

The new cities already face an uphill battle in the General Assembly due to upcoming 2014 elections creating a shorter-than-usual session. Also, the proposed boundaries of the new cities overlap, as shown in this map produced by the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association.

Commissioner Jeff Rader said those boundary disputes need further consideration.

“My hope is the general assembly will be circumspect in considering the authorization of those (new city) referendums,” Rader said.
