Capt. Eric Jackson, spokesperson for the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department, said the fire appeared to be concentrated on the second floor of the building. He said the building contained four units. Everyone else had escaped or was accounted for, he said.

On Friday, Oct. 23, Jackson announced that investigators had determined the cause.

“Fire Investigators with DeKalb County Fire Rescue determined that the apartment fire that occurred this past Wednesday at the Park on Covington Apartments was intentionally set thus ruling it an arson fire,” Jackson said. “This is an on-going criminal investigation that is open and active so no further information is available at this time. If anyone has any further information relating to this case, they are urged to call the ARSON HOTLINE at (800) 282-5804. Your identity will be kept anonymous.”
