State Rep. Karla Drenner is hosting a town hall meeting in Avondale Estates on Jan. 5.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at City Hall, located at 21 North Avondale Plaza.

Drenner will talk about issues being considered in the upcoming legislative session, which will begin on Jan. 11.

While there’s no agenda posted for the meeting, one likely topic is the issue of annexing more unincorporated territory into the city limits. The city recently hired the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia to conduct a feasibility study on the city’s annexation map.

Unlike previous versions of the map, Avondale’s new annexation proposal does not include the DeKalb Farmers Market. It does include commercial properties in the Rio Circle area, and residential areas along Rockbridge Road, as well as the former Avondale High School and the American Legion.

The city’s previous annexation bill, introduced by Drenner, died in the final hours of the 2015 session after an amendment removed the DeKalb Farmers Market – a key piece of commercial tax revenue – from the plan.
