The highly anticipated plan for the former United Method Children’s Home property will finally be unveiled next week, according to the city of Decatur.

Since purchasing the $40 million dollar property, the city has had to figure out the best use for the 77 acres of land.

After three draft options for the property were initially presented in April, they generated a lot of comments — over 3,000 of them. The potential plans included creating affordable housing units, maintaining the property as it currently exists or adding a running track and tennis courts.

And now, after months of discussion and debate, the city, along with its Cooper Carry-led project team, finally have a vision.

That vision, the nearly complete plan for the property, will be unveiled for the community Wednesday, June 27, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Ebster Gym.

Attendees will receive a short presentation of the combined concept plan, including the various factors — community feedback results, anticipated costs, stakeholder meetings, etc. — that informed its development.

Following the presentation, there’ll be break-out activities where city staff and consultants will be on hand to answer questions and gather feedback.

The meeting is open to the public.
