7-year-old boy hit by vehicle dies from his injuries, identified as Dunaire Elementary student

A seven-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the street at North Decatur Road near the North Indian Creek intersection as died from his injuries.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 14.  It happened around 3 p.m. The child was alone while he was attempting to cross, a police spokesperson said. A driver in a Nissan SUV hit the child on North Decatur Road and remained on the scene, police said.

The DeKalb County School District confirmed the child had died at the scene and said he was a student at Dunaire Elementary.

“A Dunaire Elementary student was hit and killed by a vehicle at North Decatur Road and North Indian Creek intersection,” a school district spokesperson said. “The accident did not occur at the school’s intersection. The student died on the scene due to his injuries. Witnesses stated the child ran into traffic. DeKalb County Police are conducting the investigation. His mother was on the scene and was transported to Egleston Children’s Hospital. DCSD Police are at Egleston gathering more information and also offering assistance to the family. The district is working to provide a support plan for the family as well as students and staff, including providing auxiliary counselors to Dunaire.

“We are heartbroken that one of our students, a 7-year-old just beginning his life, passed tragically [Tuesday] evening. Our thoughts are with his family and the Dunaire Elementary community during this difficult time.”
