Avondale Elementary School has been awarded a new playground from KaBoom!, a national non-profit that encourages active play for children, according to the city’s newsletter.

In order to show community support, the Avondale Elementary School Education Foundation must raise $9,000 in matching funds, the city said. General Motors, the funding partner for the playground, will pay for the rest, and the school will receive a playground worth approximately $105,000.

More than 20 years old, the existing playground equipment at AES is outdated, according to the city. The new playground will be located closer to the school, next to the gym, making it more accessible.

KaBoom will help AES students and teachers to design the new playground, keeping in mind the school’s move toward STEM certification. A STEM playground will serve as another classroom, one where students can explore STEM concepts, the city said.

If AES earns the funds, the new playground will be installed on Saturday, Nov. 3 – and school and community volunteers will be the ones actually installing it.
