Music and the Civil War

May 5 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

$10 - $30

civ.il siv(ə)l adjective: civil 1. relating to ordinary citizens and their concerns
(of disorder or conflict) occurring between citizens of the same country.

It was the war which defined who we would become as a country. A war of ideas and ideals. Of what we had been as colonies and what we could become as a nation. It laid bare our divisions and forged our path towards becoming a more perfect union.

The recent anniversaries of the Civil War and the pending expansion of the Cyclorama at the Atlanta History Center (AHC) inspired Dr. Eric Nelson, Artistic Director of Atlanta Master Chorale, to consider a concert focused on the music of the Civil War period.

In this very special concert, Atlanta Master Chorale will be joined by master storyteller Tom Key, Artistic Director of Theatrical Outfit, for an evening of songs of the Civil War—of North and South, Blue and Gray, Battlefield and Home, Slave and Free.

The concert’s repertoire will explore the songs that sprung up as a result of the Civil War conflict – songs of soldier and slave, of those who went off to war and those who were left behind. The songs and spirituals will be presented alongside poetry and contemporary letters that offer a glimpse into the struggle of our nation more than 150 years ago. The entire program, narratives, and music will expose the emotion, passion and spirit of the women and men engaged in the struggle, respecting the sensitivities of those consumed in the conflict, as well as those who recall the memory of this dark period of our American journey.

As many of these songs disappear from common use in religious and social events, choral groups are the keepers of this music and preserve its significance, history and importance as we continue to walk our historical journey.

Join us as we remember how far we’ve come, and the work which still lies before us.
