Veterans Day means a great deal to me. My dad, who passed away in 2008, served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

Friends of Decatur Cemetery will be honoring veterans all weekend long leading up to the Nov. 11 Veterans Day ceremony.

There are more than 1,000 veterans buried at the cemetery, located on Bell Street. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, volunteers will place an American flag on each veteran’s grave. The flags will remain up through Nov. 17.

Members of the Harold Byrd Post 66, American Legion will lead the memorial services on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.

Thanks to the Friends of Decatur Cemetery for doing this each year. It’s always a meaningful gesture.
