Avondale Estates City Commissioners will consider allowing brewers to make hard liquor within city limits.

The agenda for the Jan. 27 meeting says the commission is considering a law that would “permit Craft Distilleries and Artisanal Food Production in certain zones of the City.”

There will be a public hearing about the idea at 7:30 pm. It will be held at City Hall, located at 21 North Avondale Plaza.

City Commissioners first considered the changes back in November, according to information posted on the city’s website.

“The city was approached by a local alcohol distiller and vinegar producer who are interested in locating in the Central Business District,” the notes on the proposed ordinance say. “The city reviewed existing ordinances and determined that the uses were not addressed in either the zoning ordinance or the code of ordinances.”

According to one draft of the ordinance, licenses to operate a distillery could cost $1,000 annually.
