Morning after report: New Year’s Eve a bad night for some in Decatur, Atlanta

Hangovers suck, particularly when you have a court appearance in your future.

Decatur Police and Atlanta Police arrested several people for Driving Under the Influence over the New Year’s holiday.

Decatur Police arrested a 26-year-old man from Homer, GA on Scott Boulevard at 11:25 p.m. Dec. 31.  On Jan. 1, police arrested 22-year-old man from Savannah on West Ponce de Leon Avenue at 3:10 a.m. Police also charged the driver and his 23-year-old passenger with possession of marijuana.

Both drivers were pulled over for “failure to maintain lane” violations.

Atlanta Police spokesman John Chafee said there were eight DUI arrests by APD over the New Year’s holiday.

The AJC reported that two Marietta residents died in an early morning accident on Jan. 1 and alcohol was believed to have been a factor.

The Georgia Department of Public safety said there were five fatalities reported statewide between the hours of 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and midnight New Year’s Day. Georgia State Troopers responded to 137 crashes, including 52 reports of injuries, according to DPS.
