CitizensPoliceAvondaleThe city of Avondale Estates is accepting applications for its upcoming Citizens Police Academy, now in its fifth year.

Applications are due Feb. 21, the city says.

“The program, like others across the country, is part of law enforcement’s Community Oriented Policing efforts and aims to foster understanding and partnerships between the public and the police,” the city said in its announcement.

The class is scheduled for Tuesday evenings, starting on March 11 and will last for eight weeks. The topics police will cover include:

– Incident Reporting

– Investigations

– Courts & the Law

– Traffic Enforcement

– Communications/911

– Special Operations

– Firearms and Use of Force

The class is limited to 20 people. The city also has to be choosy about who can attend. Applicants have to be 21 years old, a resident or business owner in the city, can’t have a criminal record and must agree to a background check.
