During my brief foray into fiction, I found love stories the easiest to write. It’s the most fundamental human emotion. It has started wars. It’s inspired some of the most beautiful works of art and architecture the world has ever seen. It has also been the basis of a trillion songs. People fall in love. They question what it is and whether it exists. They break up. They get back together.

Love governs a lot of what we do. That’s why the Vulcans can’t stand us. But they’re a bunch of tools anyway.

Here are my picks for the best love songs, a belated nod to Valentine’s Day, which ironically is the least romantic day of all, when you think about it.
