Weekend – Decatur hosts 5K, art cruise

Pretty sweet, ain't it?

There’s a lot happening in and around Decatur this weekend.

The RAD Studio Cruise will be Saturday, March 15, from noon to 8 pm. It’s free to attend. It’s a mostly indoor event, so even if it rains you should be able to enjoy it all. There will be a trolley service shuttling attendees to six studios that are part of the Rail Arts District, a series of art studios along the CSX train corridor.  There will be four Decatur studios on the tour.

The annual Tour deCatur 5K hits the road again this Saturday, March 15. The annual fundraiser for the Decatur Education Foundation is in its 12th year, and begins at 8:45 am and ends at 11 am. The staging area for the race will be at Decatur High School and the route will involve several local streets, starting on Commerce Drive near West Trinity and finishing on the football field. Also related to recreation: You can register your kids for Summer Camp at the Decatur Recreation Center on Saturday, March 15, beginning at 9 am. The recreation center is located at 231 Sycamore Street. To see all of the available camps, click here.

The St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to fight childhood cancer will be Saturday, March 15, at the Harbour House Pub in Decatur from 3 pm to 7 pm. Several students from Decatur’s 4/5 Academy will be shaving their heads in solidarity with cancer patients.

Two local acts will be playing shows this weekend. The Bitteroots will headline the St. Patrick’s Day Block Party at Steinbeck’s in the Oakhurst  neighborhood this Sunday, March 16. (UPDATE: Due to expected rainy weather, this show has been moved to Big Tex in Decatur. The show is Sunday, March 16, and it starts at 5 pm.) Another local band, The Dammages, will also be there. The party begins at 3 pm.
