The Atlanta Board of Education has voted unanimously to hire Austin Independent School District Superintendent Meria Carstarphen as the next superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools

Carstarphen, who is from Selma, Ala., replaces Superintendent Erroll Davis, who has been a caretaker since the resignation of former Superintendent Beverly Hall. Hall was later charged with being a key player in a scheme to manipulate student test scores.

Carstarphen received a three year contract, starting in 2014 to run through 2017. Her salary information was not immediately available. She will start July 7. Her base salary will be $375,000. She will receive a $1,200 per month automobile allowance and an $800 per month expense allowance. Her contract does not include any provisions for performance bonuses.
