MARTA – No plans for fare increase

MARTA will be holding public hearings on its proposed Fiscal Year 2015 budget this week, and the transit agency promises good things for commuters.

The budget proposal includes a 19 percent increase in service hours and no fare increase for riders.

There will be a public hearing on the budget proposal on May 13 at the Decatur Recreation Center, located at 231 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA  30030, within walking distance of the downtown MARTA station. The hearing begins at 6 pm. There will also be a hearing on May 13 in the council chambers at Atlanta City Hall, located at 55 Trinity Ave., Atlanta 30303. That hearing also begins at 6 pm.

MARTA’s proposed FY 15 budget includes$415.6 million for operations and $470.1 million for capital programs. According to a press release from MARTA, the capital budget includes $149.2 million for debt service.

Among the other budget highlights noted by MARTA:

• A 19 percent increase in rail service hours

• Q-Bus (Quality Care) Program to improve overall bus fleet reliability

• Reinstituting mass utilization of more durable and secure paper Breeze tickets

• No fare increase

• Increase in promotional program fare discounts for purchases of 2,000 or more
