Here’s what’s happening in our communities for the weekend of May 3.

Free Art Friday Atlanta will be holding a FAFATL Star Wars Preview show in honor of May 4, Star Wars Day. The event will be held on May 3 at 533 W howard Ave, Decatur, Ga. The announcement says, “The #FAFATL artists are back again with a preview of all the Star Wars art going out on International Star Wars Day. The show celebrates Star Wars in all its glory. We’ll be playing the original trilogy as background and showing off all the artistic talents of Atlanta’s Free Artists.” The family-friendly part of the event begins at 6:30 pm. The Oakhurst Cooperative School will be holding its Beat the Street for Little Feet 5K Race on May 3. The race will begin at Oakhurst Cooperative School, located at 830 West College Avenue in Decatur, GA. Packet pick up and registration begins at 7 am. For more information, click here.

Fishing in Lake Avondale starts at 8 am on Saturday, May 3. “Every year residents gather at Lake Avondale to compete for the best catch of the day during the Avondale Estates Fishing Derby,” the announcement says. “Prizes are awarded to the largest fish caught, the most fish caught, and the youngest and oldest fisherman to catch a fish. Please click here to download an entry form. First, second and third place prizes awarded in the following age categories: 4 and under; 5-7; 8-10; 11-17; 18 and over.”

Georgia Safe Schools Coalition will hold a 5K in Avondale Estates on May 3 from 4 pm to 8 pm and May 4, starting at 10 am. The May 3 kickoff is at the Tudor Square event space at 119 Center Street. The May 4 run is at City Hall. The May 3 event will support the Georgia Safe School Coalition’s efforts to stop bullying in schools. The May 4 event will focus on the group’s efforts to eliminate LGBTQ bullying in schools. “All proceeds from this race will help raise awareness and provide educational materials about issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and families,” the announcement says. Avondale Estates Farmers Market is every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm at the Little Tree Art Studios parking lot from 10 am to 2 pm. The studio is located at 2846 Franklin Street, at the corner of Pine Street and Franklin Street.

DeKalb School of the Arts will hold its Tim Redovian Memorial Fringe Festival on May 2, from 6 pm to 9 pm, and May 3, from noon to 9 pm at 1192 Clarendon Avenue in Avondale Estates. The announcement says, “Friday: Pro Arte, HighLeit and Screen on the Gym. Saturday: Sing-along, acting, dance workshops, instrumental performances, Senior Dance, fashion show, concessions, silent auction, pie throwing and Cotton Candy! There will be a DeKalb County Sheriff candidates forum on May 3 from 9 am to 11 am at Chapel Hill Middle School, located at 3535 Dogwood Farms Road, Decatur, GA 30034.

Atlanta Street Hockey is conducting its summer membership drive. The group plays twice weekly: on Wednesdays and Sundays in Bessie Branham Park in Kirkwood. People who are interested in joining up can click here for more information.
