District 5 DeKalb County Board of Education candidate Jesse “Jay” Cunningham requested a recount after the May 20 primaries, but still came up short.

DeKalb County officials held the recount on May 29 and found that Vickie Turner and Thad Mayfield received enough votes to make it to the July 22 runoff.

Thad Mayfield – 35.9 percent

Vickie Turner – 28.04 percent

Jessie “Jay” Cunningham – 27.52 percent

Turner received 64 more votes than Cunningham.

State law allows for a recount if the overall vote total between the candidates is within one percent.
