The city of Avondale Estates said the Georgia Department of Transportation’s paving of US 278 will get underway starting on Sunday, Aug. 10.

Here is the full announcement from the city:

A contractor for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced they will begin milling and re-paving U.S. 278 (Covington Highway, North Avondale Road and East College Avenue) starting 9 p.m. Sunday, August 10, to 5 a.m. Monday, August 11. Work is scheduled through noon on Saturday, August 16. They will begin with the single right lane closed from Memorial Drive (S.R. 154) through Avondale Estates and up to East Lake Drive before changing directions, milling and re-paving intersections and driveways. As crews progress, lanes will be closed at various times.

Work was supposed to start back in May, but was delayed because GDOT added some drainage improvements to the contract.

“The contractor is installing granite curb as a part of the project on East Lake (Road),” spokesperson David Spear told Decaturish last month. “The curb is needed to correct drainage problems in the area; it was set up in the contract, but the amount was not sufficient for the area, so more is being added to the contract.”
