Decatur Active living is inviting the public to celebrate Car Free Day tomorrow.

The celebration will be part of the Wednesday, Sept. 24, Blue Sky Concert on the square.

Blue Sky Concerts are put on by the Decatur Business Association each Wednesday from noon to 1 pm. This week’s performer is Blake Music Group, a Soul-R&B-Jazz act.

The announcement from Decatur Active Living says, “Walk, bike or ride transit to the concert and receive a special Car Free Day sticker and/or tattoo!”

Free tattoo, you say? Go on.

“Car Free Days aim to be fun, free events encouraging people to get out of their cars and run, walk, cycle or take public transit,” the announcement says. “The central vision of Car Free Day is urban mobility that is not dependent on the private automobile.”

Decatur Active living reports that International Car Free day is celebrated on or around Sept. 22. It first started in Europe (of course it did) in the 1990’s. Active Living called it a “growing global movement” being celebrated in more than 2,000 cities in more than 30 countries.

“(Car Free Day) is not anti-car, but promotes awareness of alternative forms of transportation and the public health benefits of more active lifestyles within reach to us all,” the announcement says.
