Santa showed up for Decatur’s annual lighting of the sustainable holiday tree-shaped lighting structure in the city’s downtown on Thursday, Dec. 4.
“Now to all the boys and girls, even the grown up boys and girls, you have to do me two favors on Christmas Eve, all right,” Santa said. “On Christmas Eve, you have to go to bed early. Can you do that?”
The kids said they could handle that.
Second favor, “and this one is very, very important,” Santa said. “Don’t forget the milk and cookies. Ho, ho, ho, ho. I love milk and cookies.”
Got it. Fire that sucker up, Santa.
“And now it’s time,” he said. “Is everybody ready?”
“We’re going to count down from 100.”
Counting’s hard. Can we do 10?
“We’re going to count down from 10.”
You’re all right, Santa.
The crowd chanted backward until the tree lit up bright and green, and everybody screamed.
“Have a very Merry Christmas,” Santa said. “Good night.”
Then Santa waved his hands in the air and tumbled backward on the roof of Little Shop of Stories, landing with a thump.
Decaturish asked Police Sgt. Jennifer Ross if that really happened or if St. Nick was hamming it up for the kids.
Ross said it happened. St. Nick is fine, by the way. Christmas is still on.
