The District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that it intends to ask a Criminal Grand Jury to indict an Avondale Estates police officer for his role in a fatal 2013 shooting.

Sgt. Lynn Thomas fatally shot Jayvis Benjamin, 20, in January of 2013. Police allege that he stole a car then attacked an officer after crashing into someone’s yard. A civil grand jury reviewed the evidence in the case and recommended turning the case over a criminal grand jury.

Avondale Estates City Manager Clai Brown said Thomas is still working as an officer on the city’s police force.

“The City is aware of the recent decision from the civil grand jury and will reserve comment on this matter until it has been reviewed by the City Attorney,” Brown said. “After the City Attorney’s review, a more comprehensive statement will be provided.”
