Southern Sweets Bakery plans to celebrate the life of owner Nancy Cole just as she would have wanted – with delicious desserts.

Cole passed away July 17 after a long battle with cancer. In announcing her passing nearly two weeks ago, the bakery promised, “We are planning now and will announce a date soon to honor the life of this remarkable woman.”

The celebration is set for Saturday, August 8 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Southern Sweets Bakery on 186 Rio Circle in Decatur.

A description of the event says, “We will be celebrating the extraordinary life of Nancy Cole – founder of Southern Sweets Bakery with Yummy Desserts – Music – and Good Fellowship.”

As Decaturish previously reported, Cole had been in hospice care following years of cancer treatment.

Cole started the bakery on Rio Circle in 1992. In a 2014 interview with Pallookaville’s Jim Stacy for the PBS program “Get Delicious!” she told Stacy they expanded the bakery in 1998 beyond the wholesale market to accommodate the retail demand from Decatur and Avondale Estates residents. The bakery has continued to sell wholesale to more than 50 cafes and restaurants in the area, including Pallookaville.
