The DeKalb County Police Department lost an officer early this morning and almost lost another one yesterday in two separate incidents that occurred hours apart.

On Sept. 18 at 4 p.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet SUV. The vehicle sped up, headed south on Northlake Parkway and crashed into a RaceTrac sign on Lawrenceville Highway. Two men exited the SUV and opened fire on the officer when he arrived. The officer fired back. The suspects fled on foot and fired at backup officers arriving on the scene. One officer, Marco Vizcarrando, was struck in the shoulder and airlifted to Grady Hospital. He was treated for his injuries and released.

Police arrested  Rome Crow, 21, at the RaceTrac and later caught up with Isiah McCray, 24, who was taken into custody after being tracked by a police K9. Police found a firearm at the RaceTrac and another firearm in the vehicle. The suspects are facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and felony obstruction.

Several hours later, at 12:30 a.m., another DeKalb Police officer was involved in a fatal crash in south Fulton County, according to WSB-TV.

The TV station reports that Officer Kevin Toatley died in the accident after being hit by an SUV traveling in the wrong direction. The accident left two people in critical condition, WSB-TV says. To read that story, click here.
