Two people have been arrested on charges of murder and arson in connection with a fatal apartment fire on Covington Highway near Avondale Estates.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue’s investigation unit arrested Jasmine Lockett, 26 and Melvin Griffin, III, 27. They are charged with first degree arson and murder.

The case has been turned over to the District Attorney’s office.

“Due to the hard work and tenacity of the Fire Investigators, they were able to bring resolution to this heinous and unspeakable crime”, states DeKalb County Fire Rescue Chief Darnell Fullum said in a press release. “We keep the families affected by this fire in our prayers and hope that the arrests will bring some comfort.”

The fire began early Wednesday morning, Oct. 21, at The Parke On Covington apartments, resulting in the death of one adult male.
