(PHOTOS) – Veterans Day Ceremony at the Decatur Cemetery

As they do each year on Nov. 11, local veterans gathered at the Decatur Cemetery to observe Veterans Day.
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I. The ladies auxiliary of American Legion Harold Byrd Post No. 66 in Avondale and the Friends of the Decatur Cemetery organize the ceremony each year.

There were 50 to 60 people in attendance on Wednesday. Chris Billingsley, a retired Decatur High teacher, said last Saturday hundreds of volunteers, including Boy Scouts, decorated the graves of the cemetery’s 1,000 veterans with American flags.
