After an extensive renovation, Avondale Estates’ Willis Park is now open to the public, the city has announced.

It has opened a few days ahead of schedule. The city initially predicted it would reopen by April 18.

“Willis Park is now open! The new playground equipment, benches, swings, pathways and pavilion are fully accessible, however, the playing field will remain fenced off so the sod can fully establish,” the announcement from the city says. “A grand opening/ribbon-cutting celebration will be heldSaturday, May 14, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Festivities are being planned and more details will be announced. The City thanks everyone for their patience during the renovation.”

Willis Park, named after town founder George Francis Willis, is located off of Dartmouth Avenue and across from the Museum School on Forrest Boulevard.

In August, the Avondale Estates City Commission awarded three contracts for the project worth over $600,000.
