The Decatur School Board is considering approval of a tentative budget for Fiscal Year 2017 at its regular meeting on May 10.

According to the agenda, City Schools of Decatur is projecting $60.5 million in expenses and $57.5 million in revenue. The school system is expecting to use $3 million of its reserves, known as a fund balance, to balance the budget.

“At this time, the budget assumes a tax digest growth of approximately 2.23 percent,” the message attached to the School Board agenda says. “Please note that the tax digest numbers are preliminary numbers from the Tax Assessors Office and may increase or decrease between now and the time the tax digest is certified with the Georgia Department of Revenue.”

It is anticipated that the millage rate will remain at 18.66.

The proposed budget estimates a $4.6 million in general fund expenses over the current budget year. That is primarily due to increases in personnel costs. CSD is adding 16.5 new teacher and student support jobs and is increasing employee salaries, granting a 2.5 percent step increase and a 1 percent cost of living adjustment.

“This budget also reflects an increase of $100 per member per month to the employer portion of State Health Insurance on Classified employees starting January 2017,” the message attached to the budget says.

The final version of the 2017 budget will be approved in June.

In other business, the School Board will enter into a closed-door meeting, known as an executive session, to discuss property and personnel matters. The board will also be discussing an evaluation of Superintendent David Dude’s performance. Under Dude’s contract, the board conducts an evaluation two times per year – once during the middle of the school year, and once at the end of the year. All evaluations are confidential. The May 10 meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at CSD’s central office, located at 125 Electric Ave, Decatur, GA 30030. All meetings are open to the public.
