A widely-cited report that appeared on www.theinformation.com says that Google Fiber plans to cut its staff in half in response to slower-than-expected sign-ups for its service.

Decaturish asked Google for a comment on the report of downsizing within its Fiber division.

“We have no comment to share on this report, which was seemingly based entirely on off-the-record sources,” a spokesperson said.

The Information says the staffing cuts will reduce Fiber’s work force to 500 employees. To read the full story, click here.

This is the second story in recent weeks implying that Google may be struggling to deliver on its promises. The Wall Street Journal reported that problems installing fiber cables has led to a delay of Google Fiber’s roll out in San Jose, Calif. and Portland, Ore. The article says that the company wants to connect homes via WiFi instead of fiber cables. On Aug. 9, Google announced that Fiber is available in some parts of Atlanta and it has been available in some apartment buildings. The company gave no dates for when Fiber service will be available in other cities like Decatur and Avondale Estates.

When Decaturish reached out to Google to ask whether the company is exploring wireless delivery options for the Atlanta market, the company said its plans for Atlanta have not changed.

“We’re continuing to work closely with city leaders to bring Google Fiber to many neighborhoods in Atlanta,” a company spokesperson said. “In fact, just last week we announced Atlantans in five Fiberhoods can now sign up for Google Fiber services. For all other current cities, it’s business as usual.”
