Editor’s note: In lieu of her usual column, this week “Intersections” columnist Nicki Salcedo will be sending us updates from the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

I had the honor of seeing the US Women’s Gymnastics team in a qualifying round at the Rio Olympics. Photos can’t do the event justice, and my YouTube videos violate copyright laws. If you want to see some Olympic gymnastics, find me on the soccer sidelines this year and show you via my iPhone.
When you watch gymnastics in the real world you don’t get to see any instant replays, so you have to pay attention. The vault last about six seconds.
The fans cheer with “Get it, Aly” or “You’ve got this, Lauren” or “Finish it, Gabby.”
You can’t understand the heights that Simone Biles achieves unless you see her in real life doing a floor routine. I took some pictures and had a great day.
