Decaturish and its editor, Dan Whisenhunt, have won three awards in the annual Creative Loafing Best of ATL awards.

Decaturish won Best Local Blog and Best Local Blogger for the third year in a row. For the second year, Whisenhunt, the site’s editor and publisher, won Best Journalist.

“It’s a great honor to win this award, and it’s even more significant because our readers have recognized us for the third year in a row,” Whisenhunt said. “It’s a testament to the work that all of our contributors do. We could not do this work without the help of our subscribers. We have more than 200 now and their monthly contributions help us provide the news, free of charge, to everyone. Personally, I’d like to thank my wife, Katrina, who supported me when I started this venture. I’d also like to thank my good friend Jared van Aalten, who donated his time to help me get this website up and running. A special shout out to my writers. I hope I’ve treated you fairly and haven’t driven you too crazy with my antics.”

Decaturish.com is a locally-sourced news site that provides news and information about Decatur and surrounding neighborhoods for the Atlanta Metro area. Whisenhunt launched the website in May 2013 as a personal project, and it has continued to grow since then.

Whisenhunt created a sister site, Atlanta Loop, in August 2016. The site covers the Beltline and its neighborhoods, continuing the tradition of providing local, independent news to Atlanta neighborhoods.

A veteran journalist, Whisenhunt has worked as reporter and editor in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. His philosophy is to provide a news product that is innovative, interesting and transparent.

He moved to Atlanta in 2011 and now lives in the Decatur area with his wife and son.

Congrats to the other winners in our readership area, too.
