People interested in learning more about fire safety, take note.

“The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department will host the 14th Annual DeKalb Fire Safety Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon to 4 p.m., at The Gallery at South DeKalb (South DeKalb Mall), 2801 Candler Road, Decatur,” the Fire Department said in a press release.

Attendees will be able to meet firefighters, learn fire safety tips and take part in a Pokemon Go Scavenger Hunt. There’ll also be a selfie station, a Junior Firefighter Combat Challenge, inflatable gyms, rides, fire trucks and food.

“Participants will have the opportunity to practice crawling in a smoked-filled room in the fire safety house. DeKalb County firefighters will demonstrate how to extricate a person from a wrecked vehicle,” the press release says.

October is National Fire Prevention Month. This year’s theme is, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every Ten Years.”

“Fire Prevention Week will focus its efforts on encouraging residents to check the replacement date of smoke alarms nearing their ten year replacement cycle as well as emphasizing changing your battery when the time changes,” Fire Chief Darnell Fullum said in the press release. “Having a working smoke detector in the home is the first defense in fire prevention and is an essential part of a fire escape plan.”
