A lie can travel around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on, as the saying goes, and Atlanta Police are dealing with the fallout from a lie making the rounds on fake news websites.

The news article falsely claims that an Atlanta Police officer shot and killed a woman while she was breastfeeding. The story is a well-documented hoax with several variations, according to Snopes.com.

The Atlanta Police Department is not amused by the prank.

“With recent incidents involving police officers around the country, it is deeply disturbing that this website would publish inflammatory, reckless and insensitive content,” a press release from APD says. “This manufactured story in no way represents the City of Atlanta or the honorable men and women who serve its citizens. The City is currently examining all of its legal options related to this defamatory story.”
