A plan to turn 3.17 acres in Avondale Estates into a mixed-use project is forcing the relocation of Coyote’s Mexican Grill to Decatur.

Coyote’s will be moving into the old Carpe Diem space beneath the Ice House Lofts.

Another restaurant, Rezagarse Tapas, was briefly opened there in 2015 before shutting its doors a few weeks later. An employee at Coyotes told Decaturish the new Decatur store would open in November or December, but said he didn’t know when the Avondale Estates location would close.

Decatur Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said, “Coyotes actually started in the City of Decatur in the current Big Peach Running Shoe location but that was years ago and I think a totally different owner.”

She said the city has just received the restaurant’s alcoholic beverage application and it will be on the City Commission’s agenda on Nov. 7.

Coyote’s is making way for a large project that will redefine Avondale’s gateway.

South City Partners plans to redevelop the 3.17-acre parcel of East College Avenue between Hillyer Avenue and Sams Crossing in Avondale Estates. The city’s website says the development will have:

– 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space

– 175 residential units in four stories

– A gateway park that will preserve the trees on the property

– A rear parking deck with on-street parking and

– “Generous sidewalks and street trees to enhance the pedestrian experience.”
