Oakhurst resident Rick Berg decided to have a sixth-month long 55th birthday celebration.

That’s about how long he expects to spend riding his bike on the 6,000-mile journey between Portland, Ore. and Portland, Maine. His birthday was March 11. He intends to stop along the way to see 100 “families and friends who are on my holiday mailing list.”

Berg said he trained for this trip for 15 months.

“I’m so excited about this, I am shaking,” Berg said.
