Decatur Police say that a man accused of stealing a car from a man who offered him a ride has been arrested.

Police initially accused Boan of hijacking a motor vehicle, but the court decided that “elements of the crime” were not met. He will be charged with theft by taking of a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred on Monday morning, May 22.

Decatur Police responded to the call in the 400 block of West Ponce de Leon at 3:25 a.m.

According to the police, the man was at a gas station at Peachtree Street in Atlanta early Monday morning. He was approached by an unknown man asking for a ride to Ponce de Leon Avenue. The victim offered to give the man a ride. When they got into the city of Decatur, the victim stopped his car to check and see if he had a flat tire. When he got out of the car, the stranger he’d picked up jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off headed east on West Ponce de Leon.
