DeKalb County will pay nearly $300,000 in fines for sewage spills

DeKalb County will have to pay $294,000 in fines for multiple sewage spills, including 48 spills that were not reported.
The fines were issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. DeKalb County is under a consent decree and is required to make improvements to its sewer systems as part of the agreement.
CEO Michael Thurmond called it an “amicable resolution.”
“The DeKalb County Government has undertaken an aggressive sewer cleaning program aimed at the most congested lines based on age, repeat overflows and known maintenance problems,” he sad in a press release.
