The DeKalb Symphony Orchestra will present their annual free Community Concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Decatur, according to a press release.

In addition to orchestral operatic pieces, this year’s free concert will feature opera singer Maria Clark performing famous soprano arias from operas that include Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” Puccini’s “Tosca” and Verdi’s “Aida.”

According to the release, Clark is famous for her “virtuosic skills of expressive singing across the idioms of opera, oratorio and art song, and has been critiqued as possessing ‘the voice of an angel.’”

She also has several achievements under her belt, winning the 2004 American Traditions Competition at the Savannah Music Festival, the West Palm Beach Opera Competition and National Association of Teachers of Singing vocal competitions and the Mobile Opera and D’Angelo Vocal Competitions, according to the release.

Much of Clark’s experience is local to Atlanta. She performed with Georgia State University’s production of “Tales of Hoffman” and sang with the ensemble of Atlanta Opera in its 2005 production of “Carmen.” According to the release, Clark also participated in Atlanta Opera and Opera Comique’s 2008 collaborative production of Porgy and Bess that toured in France, Spain and Luxembourg, while singing one of the lead roles. In addition, she has sung symphonic works with DeKalb Symphony, Ludwig Symphony and the Georgia Philharmonic.

Clark has performed across the country and internationally, performing with opera companies like the North Carolina Opera, Knoxville Opera and L’Opera Comique. Clark won the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition in 2008, allowing her to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, the release said. She also performed with the Fundación Orquesta Sinfónica de Bogotá, an opera company in Colombia, the release said.

The concert is sponsored by the Decatur Tourism Bureau and other Friends of Decatur community sponsors. It will be free to the public.
