An accident that temporarily shut down Church Street on Thursday sent drivers of two vehicles to the hospital.

Lt. Jennifer Ross said the accident happened early Thursday afternoon and it briefly closed Church Street between Commerce Drive and Willow Lane.

“The investigation revealed that vehicle No. 1 was traveling northbound and vehicle No. 2 was traveling southbound,” Ross said. “Vehicle No. 1 crossed the double yellow line and struck vehicle No. 2 head on. Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles and were transported to an area hospital. The driver of vehicle No. 1 sustained multiple fractures and is in stable condition. The driver of vehicle No. 2 was transported for evaluation and is in stable condition. The driver of vehicle No. 1  was cited for failure to maintain lane.”

Reader Lindsay Davis sent in photos of the accident, saying it happened right out side of her parents’ neighborhood.

“This is right next to Glenlake Park, where the community pool and playground are located and very close to Clairmont Elementary School,” she said. “The collision occurred near multiple entrances of neighborhoods that are home to families with small children that often use the sidewalks of Church Street to walk into town.”
