DeKalb County says a major sewer spill was reported on Aug. 17 in the tributary that feeds into Nancy Creek near Mill Creek Road in Brookhaven.

The spill has been reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

“Residents in this area are warned to avoid the spill site and keep their pets from the waterway until further notice,” the county says. “A 10-inch diameter pipe appears to have been compromised by soil erosion, causing the spill. As soon as the source of the spill was identified, caution signs were posted in the area.”

Workers are repairing and evaluating the spill and a final determination is expected next week, the county says.
