Oakhurst resident Joanna Duke is described by her friends as a longtime resident and “super mama” to three children.

Last year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. She kept volunteering all the while and continued rocking the mom thing.

“She’s amazing….and so positive and humble,” her friend Kristin Ebersold told Decaturish.

She had her last day of chemo on Wednesday. Traditionally at Piedmont Hospital patients ring a bell when they leave a chemo room for the last time. It’s something Duke has been looking forward to. Her friends have been looking forward to it as well and were there to greet here – with their bells – on Wednesday afternoon. Decatur Police were also on hand to show their support.

“Joanna is so loved by this community,” Ebersold said. “Even under the circumstances, she’s the most positive, gracious, and calm person I’ve ever met.”
