In a picture perfect start to the season, the Avondale Estates Christmas celebration begins with the lighting of the Christmas tree located at the intersection of Clarendon Avenue and South Avondale Road. Adjacent to the tree, Boy Scout Troop 6 will be giving away treats in a rain-or-shine event.

Music ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Avondale Children’s Choir; the First Baptist Avondale Victorian Carolers; and members of the DeKalb School of the Arts Heitlight Ensemble. There will also be a sing-a-long Christmas carol favorites with the crowd. As the sounds of “O Christmas Tree” are heard, the tree will be lit for all to see between 6:45 – 7 p.m. Hot apple cider and doughnuts will be available after the tree has been lit as Santa Claus makes a special personal appearance for the occasion.

The Avondale Children’s Choir will be headlining something new for this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – a Christmas Lantern Parade! The families of Avondale Estates are invited to make their own Christmas themed lanterns and join in the fun. The Lantern Parade will commence at 5:50 p.m. from the parking lot of First Baptist Church to the location of the community Christmas Tree at the intersection of Clarendon Avenue and South Avondale Road.

– The annual Decatur Christmas Tree Lighting takes place on Nov. 30 at Little Shop of Stories in the Decatur Square. The lighting will take place at 7 p.m. and Santa usually makes an appearance.

– According to the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association President, “The Oakhurst tree lighting will be Sunday Dec. 10. The Oakhurst choir will kick things off with a performance at Kavarna at 5 p.m. (estimate) and in Harmony Park at 6:30. The Oakhurst Co-operative Preschool will be doing a parade down mead road with their lanterns at 6 p.m. arriving at 6:30 when the choir begins.”
