People who worry about the impact of large retail stores on the local economy, listen up. This Saturday you’ll have a chance to spend some of your money to support small businesses in your community.

Small Business Saturday is Saturday, Nov. 25. It’s a day to do Christmas and holiday shopping closer to home. The event started in 2010 and was sponsored by American Express, which heavily promotes the event.

The city of Decatur is doing its part by offering a chance to visit Santa in the Decatur Square this Saturday.

“Santa arrives in style on a fire truck at 10 a.m. and stays for milk, cookies, and photo opportunities until 3 p.m.,” the city announced. “Register for this free event at freshtix.com so there are enough fresh-baked cookies, milk, and hot cocoa to go around. SHOP SMALL for gifts at City of Decatur businesses, then head to the tent on the square to get them expertly gift-wrapped for free! Until 5 p.m.”

U.S. Small Business Association Administrator Linda McMahon encouraged people to support local businesses this Saturday.

“Small Business Saturday is about supporting local businesses and creating jobs in communities all across America,” McMahon said in a press release. “Shopping small this Saturday is the perfect opportunity for Americans to support their local community businesses and promote growth and vitality to America’s booming economy during this holiday season and throughout the coming year.”
