A mom pleaded guilty to murdering her 1-year-old daughter by leaving her in a hot car and received a 15-year-prison sentence, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office said.

The DA’s Office was seeking a 40-year sentence for Dijanelle Fowler.

“Defendant Fowler entered a non-negotiated guilty plea as indicted, to charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree and Concealing the Death of Another,” the DA’s Office said. “She was sentenced by DeKalb Superior Court Judge Linda Hunter to 20 years to serve 15 with the balance on probation.”

Fowler left her child buckled in a car seat on June 15, 2017 while she was at a LaVista Road hair salon in Tucker. When she returned to her car five hours later, she asked for assistance jump starting her car. She then drove to the parking parking deck of Emory University Hospital and repeatedly called 911 claiming she was having a seizure. Emergency responders found the body of the child when they responded to the call.
