The Decatur City Commission meets on Jan. 16 and will consider rezoning property for a new elementary school.

The meeting will be held at City Hall, located at 509 North McDonough Street. It starts with a work session at 6:45 p.m. All meetings are open to the public.

In the staff report on the rezoning, the city notes the school – slated for property City Schools of Decatur owns on Talley Street – will affect traffic on surrounding streets.

“The City Schools of Decatur is partnering with the City of Decatur to conduct a multi-modal transportation impact study on surrounding streets and intersections,” the staff report says. “It is anticipated that several area intersections will be improved, with GDOT approval, based on existing and projected vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle volumes.”

Pending approval of the zoning and land use for the project, CSD will soon begin work on a new 3-5 school at Talley Street which is expected to be finished by the start of the 2019 school year. The new school  will cost $22 million and will seat 750 students.

Some parents are asking CSD to tweak the plans to include more outdoor play space.
