Renfroe Middle Schoolers show their passions at annual Poetry Slam
Slam Poetry is a unique style of spoken-word poetry that combines the elements of writing, performance, competition, and audience participation with a hefty dose of passion. It is spoken-word ‘riffing’ on contemporary issues – and in the hands of Renfroe middle schoolers, it is an opportunity for the community to see the depth of passion and insight that these kids have to offer their peers and parents. The annual Mama Daniel Poetry Slam at Renfroe Middle School will be held this year on April 12 at 6:45 – 8:00 p.m. An essential component to a successful competition is a lively and vocal audience, so please come and support these young outspoken artists. This year audience members will also have the chance to take in beautiful visual art, photography, and musical stylings and to partake of the culinary arts offered from Renfroe student artists, musicians, and chefs as the annual Art in the Garden event joins the Poetry Slam. The doors to the school open at 6:00 p.m. to allow ample time to peruse the galleries and grab a bite to eat before the Poetry Slam competition begins at 6:45 p.m. in the cafeteria.
This year is the 10th anniversary of the annual Poetry Slam which began under the supervision of Stacy Daniel, a favorite teacher of English Language Arts, who taught for 10 years at Renfroe Middle School. She passed away in 2012, and her spirit of expression, compassion, and passion lives on in the faculty, staff, students, and volunteers who continue the Poetry Slam today. They work together to help students delve into contemporary topics – issues that trouble them, challenge them, and bring them joy. As part of the project, a professional poet and teaching artist works with all students as they study poetry in the school curriculum. As a flexible medium, poetry can take on a life of its own, and with these students of just 11 to 14 years-old, it becomes a vehicle for students to express themselves in a manner that is outside of their daily customs and in a way that their own families might not express themselves at home. Parents and peers are often surprised to hear the voices that emerge through the pens and the performances of these young poets, such as the emphatic hope that 7th grader Adam Hassan expresses when asked what drew him to slam poetry: “I just want to change the way people think. That’s all I want to do.”
Admission to the entire Art in the Garden/Poetry Slam event is free of charge, and the public is invited to bring their own passions in support of these students at Renfroe Middle School, located at 220 W College Ave, Decatur, GA 3003. But bring your check book as there will be the opportunity to buy student artwork and support the afterschool RMS Art Club.
