Decatur Police say a Renfroe Middle School student was referred to juvenile court after allegedly fleeing from police on a 4-wheeler.
“An officer was flagged down at approximately 7:45 a.m. this morning [April 19] about juveniles on a 4-wheeler on Jefferson Place,” Lt. Jennifer Ross said. “Several officers spotted the 4-wheeler but when they attempted to make a traffic stop, the 4-wheeler fled. The driver of the 4-weeler was driving erratically, failing to stop at stop signs, passing vehicles on the left and jumping curbs.”
The police department generally has a no-chase policy for traffic violations. They didn’t need to chase the suspect anyway.
“The driver of the 4-wheeler, a 13-year-old [male] juvenile from Decatur, was then located at Renfroe Middle School,” Ross said. “The ATV was located and recovered from behind a nearby vacant house. The case will be referred to juvenile court.”
Ross said police are still working to determine if the 4-wheeler was stolen.
