The Decatur Police Department on Tuesday afternoon warned drivers to stay away from a section of Church Street affected by a sinkhole.

“Church Street is closed between East Trinity Place and East Maple Street due to a sink hole,” the Police Department said on its Facebook page. “The roadway will most likely be closed through tomorrow. We will announce once the roadway is open. East Trinity Place is open.”

City Manager Peggy Merriss said a broken DeKalb County water pipe caused the sinkhole. As of Wednesday afternoon a metal plate had been installed over the sinkhole and the road had reopened.
