The National Civic League (NCL) has recognized Decatur as one of its 10 All-America City Award recipients for this year.
According to a city press release, the NCL chose Decatur for its work in “inclusive civic engagement to address critical issues and create stronger connections among residents, businesses and nonprofit and government leaders.”
“These finalist communities are building local capacity to solve problems and improve their quality of life,” NCL President Doug Linkhart said.

All applicants submitted their community-wide work on equity and civic engagement and three projects for consideration. Projects submitted by Decatur included the Better Together Initiative, the Decatur Police Department’s initiative on community engagement and training, and the I Am Decatur project, a collection of portraits and stories from a diverse cross-section of the community who make Decatur the city it is.
Communities from all over the country were among the nine other winners, including Charlotte, N.C.., Stockton, Calif., Las Vegas, Nev. and more.
