Himalayan Candles, a local artisan candle manufacturer, will host its biannual open house this weekend.

Founded by Decatur resident Julia Leaphart, Himalayan Candles produces handmade candles in decorative reusable containers. Each candle’s vessel is handmade in India, while the candle itself is poured and packaged at the facility in Decatur, which currently employs 20 people, Leaphart said.

Leaphart’s business started humbly around 2004 but has grown over the last 14 years to a national level. Himalayan Candles has been featured in national publications like House Beautiful, Good Housekeeping, Southern Living and People and has been sold at retail stores including Urban Outfitters and Nordstroms.

According to Leaphart, the company primarily sells to retail stores around the country but opens up twice a year in the summer and in December for a factory sale of discounted items.  The open house will also have both vintage props used for merchandising and empty candle vessels for sale.

The open house will take place Saturday, June 9, from noon until 6 p.m. at 202 Laredo Dr., Decatur, GA 30030. Refreshments (samosas and punch) will be served, and the event is free.
